Open Access Week, a global event now entering its eighth year, is an opportunity for the academic and research community to continue to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access, to share what they’ve learned with colleagues, and to help inspire wider participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research.
SPARC, the body that runs Open Access Week, have long had a social network that they created using Ning. The site was a little dated and they required some Google Maps integration with the much used events module that underpinned their community at key points each year, mainly during Open Access Week itself.
In collaboration with the team over at SPARC, we set about redesigning the site to be more ‘on brand’ and figured out how best to use Google Maps so the community had easy access to Open Access. See what i did there?
Here’s how the site now looks, with a huge ‘hero’ area loading the Google Map with a layer of events that click right through to the Ning event module page.
Check the site out here.
